I am queen Urraca I, proud daughter of the mighty Alfonso VI, and queen of the kingdoms of Galicia León and Castille. In spite of riots, civil wars and intrigues, I came to Compostela to show my power and demand the loyalty of my vassals, the arrogant bishop Gelmirez and the stubborn citizens of this town. I need peace desperately, in order to solve other issues that need my atention in other places of my vast kingdom. Help me, and you will be conveniently rewarded!

The oath of fealty usually took place after the act of homage, when, by the symbolic act of kneeling before the lord and placing his hands between the hands of the lord, the vassal became the "man" of the lord. Usually, the lord also promised to provide for the vassal in some form, either through the granting of a fief or by some other manner of support. Typically, the oath took place upon a religious object such as a Bible or saint's relic, often contained within an altar, thus binding the oath-taker before God. Monks of Cluny were called "black monks" because of their habits. They were extremely powerful in the 11th and 12th century, and popes and bishops were members of the order.

while feudal lords are fighting each other, clergy and monks havE created a new law, the god's truce or "paz de dios"god's wills are the only way for priests to keep the peace and PUT the swords of knights AWAY. AND MEANWHILE, THE CLUNY MONKS, THE "BLACK MONKS", WILL BECOME A REAL POWER IN THE SHADOW ACROSS ALL EUROPE. SWIFTLY THE LORDS WILL RAISE AGAIN THEIR SWORDS, BUT NOW THEY WILL HAVE A NEW ENEMY. THEY WILL FIGHT IN THE SOUTH OF EUROPE, AGAINST THE MUSLIMS, IN AL-ANDALUS, ENCOURAGING THE RECONQUEST IN CASTILLE, IN THE SOUTH OF ITALY, AND FAR AWAY, IN CONSTANTINOPLE AND THE HOLY CITY OF JERUSALEM. IT IS THE AGE OF THE CRUSADES.

The clergy was the other privileged estate, made up of monks, priests and bishops. There were enormous differences between them. A bishop like Gelmírez could behave like a great nobleman and went to battle like noble warriors did. The monks lived apart in their monasteries, although not completly isolated from the world. And most of priests usually shared the same hard life of peasantry.

The nobility was the military estate. They were owners of the land, enjoyed legal privileges and didn't pay taxes. They were subject by vassalage to the feudal king, like Queen Urraca. However, many times they were not very faithful to their oath and rebelled against the monarchs, as happened many times in the case of the Castilian queen herself.

The peasantry included the great part of the European population. They were subject to nobles and clerics, and lacked any legal rights. They were subjected to strong fiscal pressure from the feudal lords in exchange for military protection. They also paid taxes (the tenth) to the church. In the 11th century, with the reconstruction of old towns, a new group, the bourgeosie, will join this estate: merchants, craftsmen and bankers. In Queen Urraca's period, this will be the first time where they showed their power, based on material wealth and money.

This process is very primitive. In the Middle Ages, potter's wheel are extended everywhere. However, it could happen that in moments of great need, pottery could be hand by hand, as in the Neolithic.

¡SANGRE Y FUEGO!

In 1099 Jerusalem was taken to the Muslims, and the age of Crusades began. In 1117 there are little kingdoms in Jerusalem, Antioquia and Edesa, but the Muslim are preparing for war, and things won't be easy in the following years.

Reino de Castilla Ruled by Alfonso VIII in war against the Muslims.

After the battle of Hastings in 1066, the Normans defeated the last saxon king Harold and created a new kingdom under the Willhem the Conqueror. Nowadays Henry II is the new king, holding war against the kings of France to keep his old domains and manors in Normandy, and lots of tales and deeds are told about his courage and his cruelty.

Paris is becoming the most important city of all Europe, under the dinasty of the Capets.

Queen Urraca I is the ruler of the kingdom of Leon, after the death of her father, Alfonso VI. Civil wars and revolts are common in these rush years.

Rome is the city of popes. Little remains from the old days of glory, except ruins everywhere you look around, but new churches are being built, and the raising power of the popes is giving the city a new golden age.

Constantinople is capital of the Bizantyne empire, and still the most populated city in all Europe. Wealth and power are in this empire, even though it is continuously threated by the Muslims in the east.

The Normans raided and conquered Sicily in 1091 against Byzantines and Muslims, and creating a new flourishing county with the king Roger I.

This is the old land of Vikings, but now under Christian faith, and these old pagans becoming the most intrepid travellers of this age. Their ships are travelling from Greenland to the Black sea, and founding new kingdoms everywhere their ships arrive.

The book of Kells: Irish handwriting from the Early Middle Age (8th century) Printing press were not discovered in Europe till the 15th century (Chinese discovered almost five hundred years earlier). Therefore, books had to be written by hand. Scriptoriums of monasteries and cathedral schools were the only places where people had the knowledge and enough resources to carry out this activity. They were very expensive and richly illustrated by monks, specially, initial and capital letters, and this is your task. Take one of this model and reproduce it in your own notebook, with the right size and richness of colour.

Norman plough: one of the most important innovations in the 11th and 12th century. Stronger than the Roman plough, it could open and work the soil easier and deeper than the old ploughs.

In Rome, powerful Popes are fighting against the German Emperor to get the control of the Christian church in all Europe. A few decades earlier, Gregory VII humiliated the proud emperor Henry IV, making him to wear as a beggar in front of the walls of the city.

The cathedral was sieged and put on fire by the rioters in 1116. Bishop Gelmirez and queen Urraca almost die in the fight and following confusion. Even the queen suffered a wound from a stone thrown by the citizens of Santiago.

The rebels were mainly old friends of the bishop Gelmirez, but now eager of more economic power, and belonging to the richest members of the patrician bourgueoisie from Compostela. During one whole year they had the control of the town, till the arrival of queen Urraca.
